TriStart

Aged 8 at the 31 December of the year race is held.

This is the youngest age group at which children can take part in a triathlon and is based on age at the end of the year. TriStarts belong to Group S of our Saturday morning training groups.

Races are usually held on school playing fields on grass. Open water races are rare and if cycling on tarmac it will be on roads without traffic. Because of the very short distances, quick transitions are very important.

TriStarts can compete in our Club Championship and in the Eastern Region Children' League and there is a summary of all races on our East Region Race Calendar. On these pages the links tell you about each race and how and when to enter.

The standard race distances set out in the BTF rulebook for this age group are:

Triathlon
  • Swim 50m (pool) 50m to 100m (open water)
  • Bike 1000m (grass) 1.5km (tarmac)
  • Run 600m
Duathlon
  • Run 400m
  • Bike 800m (grass) 1.5km (tarmac)
  • Run 200m
Aquathon
  • Swim 50m (pool) 50m to 100m (open water)
  • Run 600m

TriStar 2

Aged 11 or 12 at the 31 December of the year race is held.

This is one of the most competitive and popular age groups and is based on age at the end of the year. TriStar 2's belong to Group 2 of our Saturday morning training groups.

Races are usually held on school playing fields on grass. There are a few open water races and if cycling on tarmac it will be on roads without traffic. Because of the short distances, quick transitions are important.

TriStar 2's  can compete in our Club Championship and in the Eastern Region Children' League and there is asummary of all races on our East Region Race Calendar. On these pages the links tell you about each race and how and when to enter.

Talented TriStar 2's in this age group should try to qualify to represent the East Region at the Inter Regional Championships ("IRC") which are usually open water races and bike draft legal. There are normally two qualification races each year.

The standard race distances set out in the BTF rulebook for this age group are:

  • Swim 200m (pool) 200m to 300m (open water)
  • Bike 4km (grass) 6km (tarmac)
  • Run 1.8km
Duathlon
  • Run 1.6km
  • Bike 4km (grass) 6km (tarmac)
  • Run 600m
Aquathon
  • Swim 250m (pool) 200m to 300m (open water)
  • Run 2km

Junior

Aged 17, 18 or 19 at the 31 December of the year race is held.

This is the last of the junior categories and members in this category train with Group C.

Juniors normally compete in sprint distance events alongside adults with the cycling often on public roads. Juniors can race in olympic distance events, but we don't recommend it.

Juniors can compete in our Junior Club Championship and in the East Region Junior League and in one off East Region Championship Races.  There is summary of all races on our East Region Junior Race Calendar. On these pages the links tell you about each race and how and when to enter.

Talented Juniors should try to qualify be be a member of the East Regional Academy who meet throughout the year for more intense race specific training sessions. 

Talented Juniors can also apply race in the Britis Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series which are draft legal races but will need to attend a Perfomance Assessment weekend before the start of the season to be eligible for these races.

Juniors who are not quite at Super Series level, can qualify at specific races to compete for the Great Brtitain Age Group team at European or World Championships, however this can quickly become quite expensive.

The standard distances are:

Sprint Triathlon Distances
  • Swim 750m (although often this reduce to 400m)
  • Bike 20km
  • Run 5km
Olympic Triathlon Distances
  • Swim 1500m
  • Bike 40km
  • Run 10km

TriStar 1

Aged 9 or 10 at the 31 December of the year race is held.

This is the second youngest age group and is based on age at the end of the year. TriStar 1's belong to Group 1 of our Saturday morning training groups.

TriStar 3

Aged 13 or 14 at the 31 December of the year race is held.

This is last of the Tristar categories and is based on age at the end of the year. TriStar 3's belong to Group F or Group C of our Saturday morning training groups.

Races are usually held on school playing fields on grass. There are a one or two open water races and if cycling on tarmac it will be on roads without traffic. Because of the short distances, quick transitions are important.

TriStar 3's can compete in our Club Championship and in the Eastern Region Children' League and there is asummary of all races on our East Region Race Calendar. On these pages the links tell you about each race and how and when to enter.

Youth

Aged 15 or 16 at the 31 December of the year race is held.

This is the last childrens age group before children move into the Junior (16 to 19) who mainly compete in adult races.  Youths belong to Group F or Group C of our Saturday morning training groups.

Youth races are usually held on school playing fields on grass. There are a few open water races and if cycling on tarmac it will be on roads without traffic. Because of the short distances, quick transitions are important.

Youths  can compete in our Club Championship and in the Eastern Region Children' League and there is a summary of all races on our East Region Race Calendar. On these pages the links tell you about each race and how and when to enter.

Talented Youths should try to qualify be be a member of the East Regional Academy who meet throughout the year for more intense race specific training sessions. 

Talented Youths can also apply race in the Britis Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series which are draft legal races. 

According to the BTF rulebook children in this age group can race up to Sprint distances, although we don't recommend they race this far. Normally Youths race over the same distances as Tri Star 3 as follows:
